On the 2nd of March Samurai Karate had a great day at our state AKF championships with 15 competitors from Samurai who entered and six being first timers. Total medal tally included 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze, with Luke and Thomas fighting for 1st and 2nd in probably one of the strongest divisions of the men's for the day. Jai Hunt showed his continued development by winning gold in Kumite Cadets & a bronze in Kata, making a good start in his hunt for worlds this year . Andy Do had an amazing result for his first AKF tournament, taking gold in Cadets Under 52kg division. Other medal winners were Bernard Le - Silver in the men's and bronze in under 21's, Christopher Ruiz - Bronze in the Junior division & Joshua Gamboa - Bronze in the 12-13 years division. Well done to all.

AKF National Championships ‘11

The 2011 AKF Nationals saw Victoria once again the overall winner and all Samurai Karate representatives coming home with a medal. This year the Victorian team had 6 Samurai Karate members all from Sunshine. They were (in order of age) Brooke Olsen, Thomas Olsen, Vincent Nguyen, Ellen Hunt, Jessica Saveska and Jai Hunt.

Brooke came 3rd in Senior female under 68kg; Thomas came 3rd in both intermediate and senior weight division and a 2nd in senior male team event; Vincent came 2nd in intermediate under 78kg division; Ellen came 3rd in intermediate under 60kg; Jessica 3rd in cadet under 54kg and 1st in cadet female team (same team as Commonwealth); and Jai won his first nationals in the children under 45kg and 1st in the children’s team, backing up his Gold at the Australian Open earlier this year.
