Karate Commonwealth Games

On the 30th and 31st of July Sydney hosted the karate Commonwealth Games. Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, Pakistan, South Africa, Scotland, India, Mozambique, Botswana and more Samurai Sunshine had 3 competitors representing Australia, Thomas Olsen, Ellen Hunt and Jessica Saveska.

Thomas won a 3rd in intermediates under 68kg; Ellen placed 4th just missing out in repo-charge; and Jessica placed 3rd in kata, 1st in cadet under 54kg and 1st in cadet female team event.

AKF National Championships ‘11

The 2011 AKF Nationals saw Victoria once again the overall winner and all Samurai Karate representatives coming home with a medal. This year the Victorian team had 6 Samurai Karate members all from Sunshine. They were (in order of age) Brooke Olsen, Thomas Olsen, Vincent Nguyen, Ellen Hunt, Jessica Saveska and Jai Hunt.

Brooke came 3rd in Senior female under 68kg; Thomas came 3rd in both intermediate and senior weight division and a 2nd in senior male team event; Vincent came 2nd in intermediate under 78kg division; Ellen came 3rd in intermediate under 60kg; Jessica 3rd in cadet under 54kg and 1st in cadet female team (same team as Commonwealth); and Jai won his first nationals in the children under 45kg and 1st in the children’s team, backing up his Gold at the Australian Open earlier this year. Well done guys.

And an extra congratulations to Thomas for being selected to represent Australia as a senior in the German Open and maintaining his place for the 2nd time on the Australian team at the Junior World Championships, this year to be held in Malaysia.
